Societal expectations of men, which often emphasize strength and self-reliance, can create a stigma around seeking help for mental health issues. This stigma can leave men feeling isolated and reluctant to reach out for support, leading them to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms such as substance abuse. The resulting elevated stress levels and lack of proper support can contribute to a higher risk of suicide among men.
It is crucial to challenge these societal expectations and create a safe and supportive environment that encourages men to seek help and access the resources they need for their mental well-being. Supporting men's mental health in the workplace not only benefits individual employees but also contributes to a healthier, more productive, and inclusive work environment.
At TELUS Health, we know it’s essential to promote awareness, understanding and actionable steps toward creating inclusive spaces, which is why we're hosting a webinar titled 'From silence to support: helping men to open up about mental health'.
